Understanding Sleep Apnea: Signs, Risks, and Treatment Options

1/5/2025

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition in which the airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep. These events fragment sleep and reduce oxygen levels, increasing cardiometabolic risk over time.

Common signs

  • Loud snoring with witnessed pauses or choking
  • Morning headaches, dry mouth, or non-restorative sleep
  • Daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, or irritability

Risks of untreated OSA

Untreated OSA is associated with hypertension, atrial fibrillation, insulin resistance, and increased accident risk. Effective treatment improves symptoms and lowers health risks.

Treatment options

  • CPAP: first-line for moderate-severe OSA
  • Oral appliance therapy: an option for mild-moderate OSA
  • Weight management, positional therapy, and surgical options when appropriate
